Changing NDIS Providers

How to Switch NDIS Providers — Without Losing Your Supports

If you're not happy with your current NDIS provider, you're not stuck. Switching is your right as an NDIS participant, and in most cases, it's simpler than people expect. Here's exactly how it works.

Can I Really Switch NDIS Providers?

Yes. You don't need permission from your current provider, and you don't need to explain yourself to the NDIS either. Your NDIS plan belongs to you — you choose who delivers your supports, and you can change that choice whenever you need to.

It's your plan, your choice.
Switching providers doesn't affect your NDIS funding or your eligibility. It simply means a different provider delivers your supports going forward.

Common Reasons Families Switch Providers

  • Inconsistent or constantly changing support workers
  • Poor communication or slow responses
  • Feeling like "just a number" with a large, corporate provider
  • Wanting more flexibility or a provider who understands your local area
  • Outgrowing a provider as your needs have changed

How to Switch — Step by Step

Check your notice period

Most Service Agreements require a short notice period, commonly 2–4 weeks, before ending services with your current provider. Check your agreement, or ask them directly.

Choose your new provider

Talk to a few options, ask questions, and make sure they understand your goals.

Let your current provider know, in writing

A short email confirming your end date is usually enough.

Update your plan manager or the NDIA

If you're plan-managed, your plan manager needs your new provider's details so invoices go to the right place. If you're NDIA-managed, you'll update this through the myplace portal.

Start with your new provider

A good new provider will help make this handover smooth, without any gap in your supports.

Will I Lose My Supports While I Switch?

No — as long as you plan the handover with a small overlap (starting your new provider before your last day with the old one, where possible), your supports continue without a break. This is exactly the kind of thing a good new provider will help you plan properly.

Switching your plan manager too?
If you're changing plan managers at the same time as switching support providers, let both your old and new plan manager know the dates clearly — this avoids invoices going to the wrong place during the transition.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Your NDIS plan is yours, and you can choose to change providers at any time, for any reason, without needing to justify it to your current provider or the NDIA.
You're under no obligation to stay. If a provider pressures you to remain after you've decided to leave, that's a sign it's the right decision — a good provider respects your right to choose.
Switching itself has no fee. Some providers charge a short-notice cancellation fee if you end services without the notice period stated in your Service Agreement, so it's worth checking that document first.
Yes, but NDIA-managed participants can only use NDIS-registered providers. If you'd like to switch to an unregistered provider like Blue Bird, you'd first need to request plan management at your next plan review.
It depends on your notice period, commonly 2 to 4 weeks. With a bit of planning, your new provider can start before your old one finishes, so there's no gap in your supports.
