NDIS Glossary — Common Terms Explained

The NDIS has a lot of acronyms and terminology. Here are the most common terms explained in plain English.
NDIS
National Disability Insurance Scheme — a government program that provides funding for disability supports.
NDIA
National Disability Insurance Agency — the organization that runs the NDIS.
LAC
Local Area Coordinator — a person who helps you understand the NDIS and connect with services in your area.
Support Coordinator
A person funded by your NDIS plan to help you find providers, manage supports, and achieve your goals.
Core Supports
Funding for day-to-day disability supports like personal care, transport, and community access.
Capacity Building
Funding to help you build skills and independence, including therapy, support coordination, and employment supports.
Capital Supports
Funding for one-off purchases like assistive technology, equipment, and home modifications.
myplace Portal
The online portal where you can view your NDIS plan, track your budget, and manage supports.
Plan Management
A service where a plan manager pays your providers and tracks your budget on your behalf.
Self-Managed
When you manage your own NDIS budget, pay providers yourself, and submit claims to the NDIS for reimbursement.
Agency Managed
When the NDIA manages your funding and pays registered providers directly on your behalf.
Service Agreement
A written contract between you and your provider outlining the supports, costs, and terms of service.
NDIS Price Guide
The official list of maximum prices providers can charge for NDIS supports.
Reasonable and Necessary
Supports that are related to your disability, help you pursue your goals, and represent value for money.
Plan Review
A meeting (usually once a year) to review your goals, discuss how your plan is working, and update your supports.
NDIS Worker Screening
A mandatory background check for all workers providing NDIS supports.
